LES QUATRE DIRECTIONS

Format: CD
Label: Locust Music (USA)
Recording date: 2003/2004
Release date: 2008

The partition of the album appears in "Partitions Excentriques" by Jean-Jacques Palix (number 49 of Art Press2 August / September / October 2018) alongside partitions from John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Morton Feldman, Cornelius Cardew…

Dominique Grimaud: records, Fender Stratocaster, Moog Source, Synthi AKS, Prophet 2000 + Robinson Grimaud: derbouka.

One song lasting sixty minutes. The partition in the shape of a circle inspired by the "circle of life" of the Amerindian tradition is a slow progression, the paroxysm of which is around 50 minutes, before gradually returning to the calm of the starting point. The musical directions are expressed in Sioux Lakota language, a tribute to these people, like the rest of the album.

Press:

“Predictably this is music that evades categories ; it works because Grimaud knows about pace, creating and dispelling tension, the interplay of drones and discrete events, the impact of repetition and surprise.” Julian Cowley, THE WIRE.
“Une année et demi d'enregistrement a été nécessaire pour ce disque, mais on croirait qu'il a été tout naturellement capté en un seul jet d'une heure, sa durée, comme on écouterait une fontaine sonore dans un état second.” Eric Deshayes, NEOSPHERES, 2008.
